Festival Mall in Alabang recently threw an all-fun celebration for more than 50 children with special needs with a party filled with dancing, games, and gifts, at the Pixie Forest and X-Site, the mall’s popular amusement center.
The children, aged 5-13 years old, came from Haven for Children – Alabang, Carmona Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO), Autism Society Philippines – San Pedro, and Las Piñas PWD Federation, who were treated to party games and free, unlimited rides.
The event was the culmination of the mall’s two-part Disability Awareness and Sensitivity Training Program, held to educate mall staff and tenants on how to better relate with persons with disabilities (PWDs) and those with special needs. It featured, among others, talks by representatives of the deaf, Down syndrome, orthopedic, and autism communities. These Sensitivity Seminars were in 2016 for the mall’s staff, especially the frontliners, to learn how to properly assist PWDs. “This is definitely something we will continue annually in order to make sure all of us at the mall are conscious and aware, and that we can tell children and their parents that Festival Mall is a safe space for them,” explains Gina Abenoja, marketing manager of Festival Mall.
“We imparted to Festival Mall’s staff necessary practices, like how to welcome PWDs and how to handle challenging situations they might face. The mall is a great place for us parents to teach many skills to our kids, so we want these spaces to be welcoming,” says Janeth Peña of the Autism Society Philippines.
