Bacolod City, touted as “The City of Smiles,” will once again flaunt its sweetest smiles at the upcoming annual celebration of the MassKara Festival.

Each year, thousands of tourists, photographers, and merrymakers troop down the city’s major thoroughfares to catch the festival highlight: the street dancing competition, which gathers contingents from scores of city barangays.

The MassKara Festival started in the early 80’s, when prices for sugar in the international market crashed due to the introduction of high-fructose corn syrup. It was also during this decade when the passenger ferry MV Doña Paz of Sulpicio Lines collided with a tanker, caught fire, and sank, killing most of its passengers.

The Masskara Festival started in the early 80’s, when prices for sugar in the international market crashed due to the introduction of high-fructose corn syrup. It was also around this time when the passenger ferry MV Doña Paz of Sulpicio Lines collided with a tanker, caught fire, and sank, killing most of its passengers. The people of Bacolod were at the lowest point in their lives; there was sadness and gloom everywhere.

Then the local artists of Bacolod thought of an event that would at least uplift the spirit of the people. They thought of creating smiling masks and have people wear it and dance in the streets. It was the birth of what is now known as the MassKara Festival.

More than three decades later, the festival has grown by leaps and bounds. Costume design has grown more sophisticated, the music has changed, but one thing remains constant: the smiles on the masks.
